Good for California
"The cable industry is a significant, influential force within the California economy which generates substantial revenues and jobs and provides in-demand broadband services to millions of residents and businesses." *
CCTA is the nation's largest state cable association representing nearly 200 cable systems serving more than 6.8 million cable customers in California. In addition to local cable operators, the state industry includes a growing number of "cable-related" industries—such as high-tech firms that manufacture the products and services which support a dynamic cable industry, programmers which create the content for cable networks, and ancillary service providers, which offer specific services to cable industry members.
* (according to Denver-based Bortz Media & Sports Group, which produced a 2000 survey report "The Cable Industry in California—It's Economic Impact" for CCTA, from which the information on this page is taken. )
California Economic Report*
Direct Impact Cable operators contributed approximately $3.8 billion to the state economy and supplied 20,000 jobs. Cable-related industries generated approximately $45 billion and employed 246,000.
Indirect Impact Cable operators and cable-related industries together generated nearly $106 billion of indirect revenue and approximately 750,000 jobs throughout the state.
Making Charitable Contributions Cable companies are actively involved in California communities contributing more than $56 million to local charities in 1999, wiring schools and libraries with high-speed Internet access via cable modem, and offering on average more than 3 PEG (public/education/ government) channels to community basic subscribers.
Providing Broadband Services California cable companies are serious about staying on the cutting edge of providing fiber technology to the communities they serve. Nearly three-quarters (71%) of all cable plant in the state is upgraded for advanced services (550 Mhz or higher), while two out of three cable plant systems under 550 Mhz were scheduled for upgrades.
Hiring a Diversified Workforce California cable companies create thousands of jobs creating a diverse workforce — a cross- section of the communities they serve. On average, across all cable systems in the state, 44% of all employees are female. Hispanics represent 20 %, African-Americans 13% and Asians 11% of the cable workforce—closely matching state demographics.
